Jaipur, best known as the Pink City, is the capital and largest city of the northern state of Rajasthan.  It is considered one of the best planed cities in the country, with its wide 34 m roads, precisely divided sectors and networks of gridded streets.  For Indian’s standards, it is a relatively new city, founded in 1727 by the Maharaja of Amber as the capital of the royalty.  Today, with its population of over 3 millions, the city has become a major tourist destination as well as an important economic center.  It houses some of the country most remarkable places including the Sanganer , Jhotwada, Mansarovar, the Raja Park and Vaishali Nagar, as well as being packed with a variety of religious sites including Hindu temples, mosque and even churches.  It is also a city of numerous parks, forts and gardens, making it one of the best cities to live in India.  This lovely metropolitan city, is a must visit place when exploring the North of India with its unique coloured buildings, magnificent forts, temples and a variety of gardens, authentic Rajasthani cuisine.

Best of Agra: top places, hotels, map, images and video

Agra is by far one of the most visited and unique tourist destinations in India.  Indeed being home to the world famous Taj Mahal and numerous other splendid heritage sites such as the Agra Fort, the city attracts millions of visitors each year, both from India and internationally.  With a great railway connection from the capital, many choose a quick day trip to visit the key sights, but a good couple of days is recommended to fully experienced everything the city has to offer, as well as the attractions located nearby such as Mathura and Fatehpur Sikri.  This grandiose city located within the northern part of the Uttar Pradesh state, is part of the golden triangle, along with New Delhi and Jaipur, and often considered the main places to visit for a first trip to India.   Agra, established in the 16th century was at the heart of the Mughal empire, today best remembered for their architectural legacy of fascinating forts, tombs and other majestic buildings.

Best of Rishikesh: top places, map, images and video

Rishikesh, often referred to as the Gateway to the Himalayas, is one of the most charming hill stations within the state of Uttarakhand in the Northern part of India.  It is perfectly situated at the foothill of the world’s largest mountain range, proudly sitting on the bank of the holly Ganges River.  For many Indians, it is one of the most important pilgrimage sight in the region, with a variety of religious temples, as well as being the first stop of the Char Dham Yatra Sacred Journey.  As for the international travellers, it has become a sought after destination, ever since it was visited by the Beatles some decades ago.  Rishikesh is also considered the World’s Capital of Yoga with plenty of ashrams, meditation and fitness centres to be found.  This lovely hill station is the perfect place to be discovered will it be for spiritual reason, for its yoga schools or extreme sports, or just to contemplate its breathtaking mountain and river scenery.

Delhi is India’s political and administrative capital as well as one of the most important cities in the country.  It has some of the most expensive areas to live, and has recently surpassed Mumbai as the most sought after city to live in India.  It has a long history, with the first archaeological evidence dating back to 300BC, and had since been conquered and ruled by numerous empires and kings.  The city was at the heart of India’s independence, when in 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister.  Today, Delhi has become a big metropolis, hosting the 2010 Commonwealth games and as well as recently opening a wide and efficient metro network

Mumbai often referred through its former name Bombay is one of India’s most important cities.  Indeed it is the country’s financial and commercial capital as well as a major artistic centre, home the world’s biggest film industry, commonly known as Bollywood.  It is where some of India’s most powerful and richest entrepreneur implements their vision, right next to the country’s poorest in some of the planet biggest slums, where about half of the city population live.  Mumbai, as a city of contrasts is definitely an understatement, with old and new, rich and poor, colonial heritage and Indian influence, skyscrapers and slums, constantly touching and overlapping each other. This mix of chaotic traffic, ancient bazaars, variety of religions and a melange of cultures, makes the city truly unique and definitely worth discovering.  It is perhaps not for everyone, but for those looking for adventure it will be a life changing experience, once one will feel the unconventional pulse of the city, and start truly appreciate everything it has to offer.
