Americas: an introduction

The Americas is a vast continent referring to the landmasses of both North, South, Central America and often including the idyllic islands of the Caribbean’s.  It represent about a third of all the world land mass and some 13% of the world population.  It is a place of great diversity, from the Rockies mountains in the North West of Canada, to the beaches of Brazil, passing by some of the worlds’ greatest cities such as NYC, LA and Buenos Aires.

Americas countries

The Americas has 35 countries spread out between North and South America, passing by the various Caribbean’s island which many are only dependencies of Europeans nations.  The biggest countries in the Americas include Canada and the US in the north , Brazil in the South. The North America region which include central America and the Caribbean’s is divided into 23 countries, with the remaining 12 countries in South America.

Americas languages

The Americas has 4 mostly used official languages including in order of importance Spanish, English, Portuguese and French, mainly used in the Canadian province of Quebec.  Spanish is by far the dominant language on the continent, especially in the South and Central part.  North America is dominated by English although Spanish is becoming increasingly popular.  Montreal is the largest Francophone metropolis on the continent and the second largest in the world, coming right after Paris.

Americas population

The Americas contain about 13.5% of the human population with a total of about 900 million people.  Over 500 million people live in North and central America,  with the rest spread in the southern part of the continent.

The Americas largest urban centres are Mexico City, Sao Paulo and New York City with each having a metropolitan area population approaching 20 millions.

Americas geography

The Americas cover 8.3% of the Earth’s total surface area and 28.4% of its land area. Its northernmost point,  which is also the northernmost point of land on Earth is Kaffeklubben Island on the northern tip of Greenland.  The southernmost point are the British islands of Southern Thule.

Americas religions

The most prevalent religion in the Americas is Christianity (mostly Catholic and protestant) with 85% and 93% respectively in North and South America.  Islam and Judaism religion is each practised by some 2% of the population, mostly in the USA and Canada.

Americas economy

The United States of America has by far the biggest economy with a GDP of about 15 Trillion dollars.  It  is followed by Mexico and Canada with 1.6 and 1.3 Trillion dollars respectively.  As for the southern continent, Brazil is by far the leader with a GDP of 1.6 Trillion dollars.

Americas History

The first settlers of the Americas were the Paleo-Indian which migrated through the Bering land bridge  an ice passage between current Alaska and Russian Siberia.  The Americas were later first discovered by European with the voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492 who was looking for a faster way to go to India. America was named in 1507 by cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the newly discovered lands were not India, but a New World unknown to Europeans

The Caribbean often considered North America playground, is an ideal place for a beach holiday especially during the colder winter months. Indeed the region is blessed with an ideal all year round tropical climate and plenty of white sandy beaches to choose from.  It is a very popular sun and sea destination with Canadian and American, and more and more with Europeans.

The Caribbean region is situated  within the Caribbean sea, an area southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and east of Central America.  It is largely situated on the Caribbean Plate and comprises of more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays. The Caribbean islands, are also called West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies in Asia.
