Historical Context¶

Early History (800-1806)¶

The region that is now Germany was inhabited by various tribes, including the Franks, Saxons, and Vikings.
In 800 CE, Charlemagne united much of Western Europe under his rule, creating a vast empire known as the Holy Roman Empire.

Prussian Rule (1806-1918)¶

After Napoleon's defeat at Austerlitz in 1805, Prussia took control of Germany through a series of wars.
In 1871, Prussia became the dominant power in Germany after winning the Franco-Prussian War and unifying the country under Otto von Bismarck.

Weimar Republic (1918-1933)¶

After World War I, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, which imposed harsh penalties on the country.
In 1920, the Nazi Party came to power in a rigged election, and Adolf Hitler became Chancellor in 1933.
